GLYCOSCIENCE AT UCSD
glycobiology resource training center
UCSD's Glycobiology Research and Training Center (GRTC) has been a force for advancing research in glycoscience for over 19 years. The GRTC leadership directs graduate courses in glycosciences, manages the production of the Essentials of Glycobiology textbook, and developed the international accepted glycan symbol nomenclature (SNFG). The GRTC is centered at UC San Diego but includes a members from institutions across California with a variety of research interests. Click here to find out more!
GLYCOSCIENCE EDUCATION
Introduction to Glycoscience Course (CHEM 142/242)
First offered in 2018, this course was established as a collaboration between Prof. Kamil Godula and Prof. Jeff Esko to provide exposure to basic glycoscience concepts for undergraduates. The course continues to rise in popularity, with enrollment for Fall 2024 reaching over 160 undergraduate students. This course also offers a teaching opportunity for graduate students in the lab to gain teaching experience in their field.
GlycoBootcamp
The format for this 2-week summer lab workshop consists of a series of tutorials and hands-on exercises where trainees will learn how to isolate and characterize GSLs, GAGs, N-linked and O-linked glycans from mouse tissues, comparing a disease model to wild type mice. The trainees generate real world data that will be formatted for presentation as a conference proceeding. In addition, the trainees gain basic skills in histological analysis of glycans in tissue slices, metabolic glycan engineering in cell culture and the construction of glycan arrays. This is a high-intensity, focused, short course, which balances the presentation of the theory behind individual methods with practical demonstration and scholar participation.

sAN DIEGO GLYCOBIOLOGY SYMPOSIUM
The GRTC hosts the San Diego Glycobiology Symposium (SDGS), an international meeting fostering research, collaboration, and community in glycosciences.
